Charity Quilts

The Charity Quilts committee has a standing - and right now a desperate - need for fabrics for the making of charity quilts.

ANY size pieces or yardage are welcomed - even scraps for crazy quilt blocks! - please see what you can give from your stash and bring to donate at any guild meeting.

Each piece will be a future smile for someone who needs comfort and hope!

To make it more fun - let's see what we can find by the colors each month (not that we'd turn down others, of course!):

November - Blacks, greys

December - Whites, off-whites

January - Pinks

Thank you,

2007-2008 co-chairs Connie Zwego & Mary Langenberg

Charm Square Exchange

Contact Mindy Peterson to sign up. The first exchange is in January.

1. Quantity: Every person in the group will cut two 5" squares for every member in the group. For
example, if 50 people sign up, every member will cut 100 squares of the same fabric. Each person will
then receive a pair of each fabric.

2. Fabric: The fabric shall be quilt shop quality (no Joanns, WalMart, Hobby Lobby, etc.) 100% cotton
fabric. Each member will be required to cut off the selvage of the fabric that shows the artist's
name, company's name, the line of fabric, etc. and place in the bag with your group of charm squares.

3. Cutting: The fabric will be pre-washed, ironed and cut with a rotary cutter. Laying the charm square
on top of a 12" x 12" ruler you can see if they square and if the size is correct. Most ladies don't
want to "recut" the squares again and one cannot add fabric to an ill cut charm!

4. Packaging: You will bring your fabric to the meeting in a ziplock baggy with your name and assigned
number on two separate slips of paper in the baggy. The identification selvage should be included in
the baggy with your 5" squares. If the fabric does not meet the requirements, it will not be included
in the exchange.

5. Exchange:
a. Each person trading is assigned a number.
b. That number is written on two pieces of paper, one for the person, one for the spot on the
table where that person will start the trade.
c. The numbers will be placed at least 2 feet apart on a table (or tables).
d. Every person will start at their assigned number. A person will lay down a pair of 5" squares
by their own number and then lay down a pair of 5" squares by the next number, and continue
until all the squares are laid down. This will allow the squares to be quickly distributed.
e. We will allow for people to do more than one trade in case they want to receive more than one
set. They will be assigned two different numbers. They would trade one set of squares
starting at their first number assigned to them, then start at the second number assigned
and trade the second set of squares.

6. Theme: Each exchange will have a theme. For example, the first exchange could be all 1800's
reproduction fabrics, the next exchange, batiks, etc.

Block of the Month Group

(BVBOM Group)

For more information, please contact Kristen Smith.

Many of our members have recently expressed an interest in having a block of the month club, so we are organizing a 12 month block of the month program. Each participant must commit to participating all 12 months - and must commit to the turn-around times specified.

Every BVBOM group will consist of 12 individuals, each assigned to one month of the year. We can have more than one BVBOM group going at the same time and you can participate in more than one group if you wish. We can stagger the start dates if we need to.

Each member of the group will be assigned a particular month. That month, they will pick one block pattern, make that block and provide the other 11 members with the following:

  1. The block pattern of your choice, whatever size you desire, with instructions on construction.
  2. The fabrics you would like used in the block:
    A. You can provide all the fabrics and specify which to use, and where
    B. You can provide none of the fabrics, requesting a 'scrappy' look
    C. You can specify colors for the pieces or background, or both and let each member choose their own fabrics in your specific colors
    D. You can request a color combination and let the others choose what and where they are used in the block
    E. Any other combinations of the above as you desire, as long as your instructions/directions/requests are very specific
  3. Specific instructions to your block, i.e., 'all small triangle pieces are navy', etc.

PLEASE put each member's pattern, instructions, and fabrics in a ziplock bag and label with YOUR name, their name, and the MONTH IT IS DUE.

The next month, the other 11 members of the group will return the completed blocks so that the person from that month has 12 blocks of that pattern.

*This block of the month club is not currently a sampler club. Members of this block of the month club will end up with 12 blocks of the same pattern.

We will have the sign-up sheet at the October meeting and will start this at the November meeting - Kristen will assign each of the group's 12 participants a month. The first will be November (Kristen will notify the November person prior to the meeting so she can have her 11 ziplock kits ready to hand out at the meeting). The November person's blocks will then be due back at the December meeting, and the December person will provide 11 ziplock kits to the others in the group. The December person's blocks will then be due in January - and so on.

At the end of the 12 months, all 12 members will have 12 completed blocks of their own desired design (of course, you will make 1 block of your own).

Please, please……..make this a commitment you keep. If you miss one of the meetings, please contact that month's person and get the block kit from her. Also, please be responsible and get your completed block to the person assigned to the month you missed.

You will each receive a list of the assigned months, names, phone numbers and email addresses of all the participants. Email Kristen if you would like to be added to the sign-up sheet started at the September meeting.

Thanks!!!
